On January 19, the 200 meter long, 63529 dwt bulk carrier Royal Jade caught fire while berthed at the Karachi, Pakistan. The Royal Jade had arrived from Russia with a cargo of 57,750 tons of wheat. While the Royal Jade was being unloaded, a fire broke out on the cargo deck spewing out smoke around the vessel. Authorities responded sending a firefighters along with a fire tug to assist in dousing the fire. Reports states additional resources arrived on scene in case the fire could not be brought under control. No reports of injuries. The source of the fire is suspected to a carbide that caught fire on the deck.

The 300 meter long, 94600 dwt container ship Tolten allided with the 239 meter long, 72982 dwt container ship Hamburg Bay in Karachi, Pakistan. The Tolten was maneuvering to berth in the harbor when it’s port side scraped against the moored Hamburg Bay.  More than 20 containers broke free off the Tolten and feel into the water.

No reports of injuries. Hull damage to either vessel has not been disclosed.  Pollution from torn containers have been reported in the harbor. Terminal operations have halted in Karachi while containers are recovered.

The 275 meter long, 45995 dwt container ship YM North went aground off Manora Island, Karachi, Pakistan.   The vessel had arrived from Singapore with 1746 containers when it ran aground after suffering a power blackout from an engine failure.   Several tugs were dispatched and refloated the boxship with the next rising tide.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
