The 88 meter long, 3680 dwt freighter Nordica allided with a lock gate on the Kiel Canal near Kiel, Germany.   The Nordica was entering the northern lock when it suffered engine failure and drifted into the lock gate.  No reports of injuries and no pollution released. The gate suffered severe damage closing the lock to traffic.  The Nordica proceeded out of the lock to Kiel where it was detained by the water police for investigation.

The 114 meter long, 3353 dwt coastal freighter Nikolay L went aground on the River Don near Rostov-on-Don, Russia.   The Nikolay L departed Rostov-on-Don with a cargo of manganese ore bound for Turkey when it went aground.   The freighter suffered cracks in the hull which allowed water ingress into the hull.   No reports of injuries or pollution.   Reports state the Nikolay L may have been damaged by ice and was grounded to avoid the vessel sinking.
