Bydgoszcz BM 5257

The 56 meter long, 507 ton self-propelled barge Bydgoszcz BM 5257 allided along the embankment on the Mittelland Canal near the 269 kilometer mark.  The master of the vessel was unable to maintain his course in dense fog.  The BM 5257 hull was damaged and the vessel suffered water ingress.  The master of the vessel contacted the Oebisfelde fire department who found the vessel nearly sunk with water two meters high in the living quarters.  Using a submersible pump, the fire department were able to keep the vessel afloat until divers could make repairs.  The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.  The vessel did not have radar and lacked equipment to prevent it from sinking. The BM 5257 was proceeding from Poland to Wittingen with a cargo of 450 tons of fertilizers.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Volgo-Balt 210

Volgo-Balt 210

The 3165 dwt river freighter Volgo-Balt 210 went aground on the Volgo-Baltic Sea waterway near the 876.5 kilometer mark.  Attempts to refloat itself were unsucessful.  A tug was requested to assist.  The Volgo-Balt 210 was headed to Germany from Vytegra with a cargo of logs.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Locked In

Locked In

The 123 meter long, 8280 dwt chemical tanker Med Arctic allided with the gate in the middle lock of the North Sea Lock complex at Ijmuiden, Netherlands.  The lock suffered significant damage requiring the inner gate to be replaced and the lock to be closed for a week.  Authorities have detained the Med Arctic which remains inside the middle lock.  Traffic through the complex has been redirected to another lock.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.
