Collision on the Elbe

Collision on the Elbe

The 162 meter long inland freighter Niedersachsen 2 collided with the barge Forelle while on the Elbe River.  The Forelle, with a cargo of sediment, went off course and veered directly in front of the bow of the Niderersachsen 2.   The collision ripped an air tank off the Forelle allowing the barge to quickly fill with water.   The two crew on the Forelle were rescued as the barge capsized and grounded on a nearby groin field.   No reports of injury.   Powerful pumps were brought to the scene to raise the Forelle which will be towed to Hitzler Werft, Lauenburg, Germany.
