The 139 meter long, 13567 dwt freighter Cheng Lu 15 sank off  Pohang Republic of Korea.  The Cheng Lu 15 had been at anchor when it was struck by strong winds and rough seas.  The waves push the Cheng Lu 15 against the seawall and soon after sank.   Authorities attempted to reach the vessel, but were hampered by the severe conditions.  When rescuers got to the scene, the vessel was nearly completely submerged.   Initial reports stated that all 19 crewmen on board were missing, but later 1 body was discovered.  Authorities report that the Cheng Lu 15 was in ballast and had been scheduled to depart for Japan.  Korean authorities continue search and rescue operations.

MGM NO.5 Explosion

The 84 meter long, 1384 dwt freighter MGM No. 5 exploded and sank in the East China Sea near Namhae Island, South Korea.   The freighter was carrying a cargo of metallic powder from Incheon, Korea to Wakayama, Japan.  The 41850 dwt container ship FESCO Diomid was nearby and rescued 9 crewmen from the MGM No. 5.  One crewman remains missing.  The crew were later picked up by the Coast Guard by helicopter and taken ashore.  Authorities dispatched patrol boats to look for the missing man.   An investigation into the incident was launched.  Reports state the MGM No. 5 now rests in 90 meters of water.

The 105 meter long, 6436 dwt freighter Tian Yun sank near Busan, South Korea.   Reports state Korean authorities were notified of the vessel sinking who then dispatched search helicopters and patrol boats to the scene.   Seventeen crewmen were rescued.  No further details reported.
