The 98 meter long self-propelled tanker Synthese 3 went aground on the Rhine River near Oberwesel, Germany.  The tanker was carrying 1300 tons of sulphuric acid from Ludwigshafen  bound for Antwerp, Belgium when the tanker went off course and ran aground.   No reports of injuries, but traffic on the river near the scene was suspended.  The Synthese 3  had a double-hull and no pollution or cargo was released.  The tanker Synthese 15 was brought to the scene and unloaded some 240 tons off the Synthese 3 before it could be refloated.  The vessel was refloated a few hours later and proceeded to Duisburg for inspection.  The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Collision on the Neckar

Collision on the Neckar

The 86 meter long self-propelled tanker-barge Wervelwind collided head-on with the 105 meter long, 2138 ton self-propelled barge Adolf Blatt on the Neckar River near Landenburg, Germany.  The Wervelwind suffered some damage, but the Adolf Blatt suffered a two meter wide hole in the hull.   There were no injuries on either vessel.  The Wervelwind was proceeding to Landenburg with 350 tons of phosphoric acid while the Adolf Blatt was travelling in ballast.   No pollution was released as the Wervelwind is a double-hull tanker.  Damage to the Adolf Blatt has been estimated to be around 10,000€.  Both vessels were detained by the water police for inspection.  An investigation into the incident is being conducted.

Collision on the Weser

Collision on the Weser

The 294 meter long, 63160 dwt boxship MOL Efficiency was struck by the 166 meter long,  16073 dwt freighter Splittnes in the fog on the Weser River near Bremerhaven, Germany.  The Splittnes had significant damage with the forepeak suffering a hole some 10 to 15 meters long.  The breach allowed a large amount of water to ingress resulting in a 20 degree starboard list.   The MOL Efficiency suffered a large hole in the stern section of the hull just above the waterline.   There were no injuries on either vessel.  Both vessels were towed to a quay where fire rescue were assisting in dewatering the Splittnes.   Reports state that visibility was limited to just 180 meters at the time of the collision.   The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
