The 83 meter long, 1768 dwt freighter Rebecca Rousing became disabled off Öland, Sweden.  The Rebecca Rousing was en route to Gotland from Wolin when the vessel suffered a mechanical breakdown resulting in a power blackout.  The freighter went adrift in heavy seas and high winds and was in danger of being blown ashore.  The crew contacted the Swedish Coast Guard who dispatched a rescue vessel from Öland and took the Rebecca Rousing under tow. Both vessels proceeded to northern tip of Öland where it dropped anchor and sheltered from the wind and waves.  No reports of injuries to the five crew or pollution released.

Tera Aground

Tera Aground

The 91 meter long, 3035 dwt freighter Tera ran aground off Öland, Sweden while en route to Västervik.  The vessel was able to be refloated under its own power and proceeded to Flivik.  No reports or injuries, damage or pollution released.  The authorities at Flivik launched an investigation into the incident.  Reports state the first mate may have fallen asleep at the wheel resulting in the grounding.

Phantom

Phantom

The 82 meter long, 3200 dwt freighter Phantom became disabled while off Öland, Sweden.  The Phantom loaded with lumber bound for Casablanca suffered a cargo shift resulting in a severe list.  Part of the deck cargo broke loose and fell overboard.   The crew of six on board contacted the Swedish Coast Guard who dispatched vessels and a helicopter to the scene.   The helicopter first arrived and winched the crew to safety.  Later a Coast Guard vessel was able to attach a line and took the Phantom under tow.   The vessels were reported to be heading to Oskarshamn.   Reports state there is a risk that the Phantom may capsize before reaching safety due to heavy seas in the area.   Environmental vessels are also standing by in case pollution is released.
