The 102 meter long r0-ro passenger ferry Elena caught fire while berthed in Crimea, Ukraine. The ferry had begun to maneuver away from its berth in the port when the crew spotted a thick plume of smoke along the starboard lower deck. The crew quickly responded and were able to extinguish the blaze in a few minutes. No reports of injuries or pollution released. An investigation found there was a short-circuit in one of the compartments in the lower deck which resulted in the fire. Damage was limited and after an inspection by local authorities, the Elena was allowed to continue on its schedule route across the Kerch Strait.
