Aurora Australis

A fire broke out on the 95 meter long, 3911 dwt research vessel Aurora Australis while berthed at Hobart, Tasmania.  The fire started in the laundry when a towel overheated and caught fire in a dryer.  The local fire brigade was called to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze.  Reports state there was minimal damage and no injuries.

Gulf of Mexico Collision

The 228 meter long, 74035 dwt oil tanker FR8 Pride collided with the 7279 gt jackup oil rig Rowan EXL-1 in the Gulf of Mexico near Corpus Christi, Texas.  The FR8 Pride was en route to the Aransas Pass Channel when it suffered a power blackout before striking the rig.   The tanker’s forward ballast tanks were holed and rig suffered significant damage.   The FR8 Pride was towed to shallow water where it grounded to prevent further flooding.   No reports of injuries.   Some pollution was released when hydraulic oil leaked from the oil rig.  The Coast Guard dispatched a cutter to the scene help with clean-up efforts.  The Coast Guard has also started an investigation into the incident.

The 13.5 meter long  fishing vessel KCee sank off Secretary Island, New Zealand.   The vessel last reported it was bound for Blanket Bay with two men on board.   No additional communication came from the vessel until the emergency beacon was activated.   Authorities dispatched multiple helicopters while local fishing vessels assisted in searching for the two men.  During the search, the part of the bow of the KCee was discovered.  Later, the hull was found partially submerged near the island.   The hull was heavily damaged and shows sign that it had struck an object or grounded.   No further details reported.
