Schlei Princess

The 35 meter long stern-wheeler passenger ship Schlei Princess became disabled on the Schlei near Karschau, Germany.  The vessel was on a schedule round trip through the fjord when it suffered a malfunction with its rudder.  The vessel requested assistance and the DGzRS dispatched two lifeboats to the scene.    The lifeboats took the Schlei Princess under tow back to Kappeln.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Paranga

The 100 meter long, 4766 dwt container ship Paranga ran aground near English Caye Channel, Belize.  The Paranga was en route to Kingston, Jaimaica from Belize when the crew made a navigational error and struck a reef.   The container ship suffered minimal damage.   No reports of injuries to the 13 crew on board and no pollution was spotted.  The crew contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched a response team to the scene.

The 130 meter long, 7822 dwt freighter Brielle caught fire while at Ensenada, La Plata, Argentina.  The fire started by a crewmen using a cutting torch in the engine room and quickly engulfed the vessel.   Local firefighters were called and were able to contain the fire.   One crewman perished while another six crew were injured by smoke inhalation.   The injured crew were later taken to hospital.   The Brielle was loaded with machinery at the time.  The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
