The 526 foot long, 17229 dwt container ship Paul Russ ran aground while entering the port of Saipan, Northern Marianas.  The Paul Russ had run onto a reef while transiting the channel into the harbour near buoy number 3.  Reports states there is some 400,000 gallons of fuel oil on the vessel.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  The United States Coast Guard established a safety zone around the vessel as the Paul Russ has partially block the channel entering into the harbour.  Initial efforts to salvage the vessel had to be halted after the discovery of unexploded ordnance near the vessel.

The 100 meter long, 5565 dwt cargo ship Samskip Akrafell ran aground onto a small rocky reef between Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður, Iceland. The Akrafell sustained hull damage resulting in water ingress. The 12 crew on board immediately attempted to contain the ingress, but the flooding could not be controlled with the vessel’s pumps.  Authorities dispatched rescue vessels to the scene delivering more pumps to the Akrafell.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Divers will conduct an inspection of the hull before the vessel is pulled free and refloated on the following high tide.

The 190 meter long, 52,376 dwt bulk carrier Ince Inebolu ran aground off Astypalaia Island, Greece.  The Ince Inebolu was  en route to Russia from Yemen in ballast when it ran ashore  resulting in hull damage and minor water ingress in the bow.  No reports of injuries to the 22 crew, damage or pollution released.  Reports state the flooding was under control and the Greek Coast Guard was on scene.  A tug was requested to help refloat the vessel. The cause of the grounding was not reported.
