On July 23, the 32 meter long paddle-wheel passenger ship Lady of the Lake caught fire just as it berthed at Clear Lake, Iowa. The fire when a wood column ignited by the exhaust from the vessel’s generator.  The 100 people on board were able to be safely evacuated off the vessel to shore.  No reports of injuries.  The fire was extinguished by the crew.  Reports state damage to be estimated around $7,500.

The 1,112 foot long, 154,407 gt passenger cruise ship Freedom of the Seas caught fire while entering into the port of Falmouth, Jamaica. The fire started in a mechanical space near the stack spewing out black smoke.  One crewman sustained injuries receiving first-degree burns. No reports of injuries to any of the 4,454 passengers on board.  The vessel’s fire suppression system was activated and extinguished the blaze within two hours.  The  Freedom of the Seas arrived in Falmouth and passengers were able to disembark.  Damage from the fire was reported to be limited and the cruise itinerary has not changed.  The Coast Guard will inspect the vessel when it returns to the United States.

Two barges collided in the Intracoastal Waterway off Galveston, Texas. Two tugboats were pushing barges off the Bolivar Peninsula when one of the tugboats suffered a power blackout.  The barge being pushed by the disabled tug struck a second barge.  A barge was loaded with 3500 tonnes of naphtha caught fire.  Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze four  hours later. No injuries reported. The Coast Guard has dispatched a team to the scene to check for any pollution released or environmental impact.  An investigation into the incident has been launched.
