Collision in Irbe Strait

Coral-Opal

The 186 meter long oil tanker Maersk Etienne collided with the 225 meter long bulk carrier Coral Opal in the Irbe Strait near Mikelbaka, Lativa.  The two vessels collided while doing a maneuver during the night resulting in both vessels being slightly damaged. The Coral Opal sustained damage to a ballast tank, but was allowed to proceed after a visual inspection. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Maerks Etienne was en route to Riga from Rouen while the Coral Opal was headed to Amsterdam from Riga.

On January 14, the 89 meter long general cargo vessel Retaj caught fire while off Iskenderun, Turkey.  The Retaj was loaded with a cargo of hay which caught fire.  The 23 crew members on board abandoned ship  and safely rescued.  Fireboats pulled alongside the burning cargo ship and towed the Retaj to a nearby quay where local firefighters attempted to contain the blaze.  The firefighters were able bring the fire under control the following day assisted by rain and efforts of the fireboats. Damage to the Retaj left the superstructure scorched and cargo destroyed.

The 98 meter long, 1654 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Menggala collided with the 95 meter long LPG Tanker Gas Melawi in the Sunda Strait off Cilegon, Indonesia.  The tanker struck the ferry damaging the bow ramp and port railing. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Gas Melawi sustained only slight damage. No further details reported.
