Costa Concordia – Update

Four Bodies Recovered

Divers have recovered three bodies from the wreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia.   Two female bodies were recovered on desk 4 near the Internet Cafe.  An additional female body was recovered earlier, but was not on the list of missing registered passengers.   This has made a big problem in knowing how many people are missing because no one knows how many unregistered passengers were aboard ship.   One report states that the vessel that boards the vessel has their photograph taken when they go up the gangplank.   An officer from the Concordia stated that the vessel kept electronic records of passengers and there was not a possibility of stowaways.

On January 24, another body was recovered by divers searching on bridge 3 making the total recovered to 16.

Oil Removal

Salvage crews report that they have been given the go-ahead to begin pumping out fuel oil, diesel and lubricants from the vessel.   The 2,400 tons of fuel oil will be the highest priority.   The operation is slated to begin January 24th and should take more than 4 weeks to finish.   Salvors will attach steel moorings to the front of the vessel and another oil boom will be placed around the vessel to contain any pollution released.

  1. What is a real reason of “Costa Concordia” tragedy?

The “Costa Concordia” tragedy one more time highlighted that the most essential safety concern problems on board large passengers ships is not really ships designs, operational procedures and safety standards used in this sector but just “human factor” .
Captain and his officers look perfect when crew presentation and drills are carried out, but getting completely out of order when real emergency happened ,and are capable, only, to take care about their own lives (SS “Yarmouth Castle, flag Panama, captain Byron Voutsinas ; MTS “Oceanos”, flag Greece, captain Yiannis Avranas and his officers).
It is a very big difference in behavior of any person doing regular duties and when real emergency situation happened.
Vessels sophisticated designs, cruise companies safety respond procedures, crew certification and training requirements are getting useless when captain and his officers ,because of their personalities, are not capable to act properly during emergency.
Therefore the main reason of this tragedy is approach to crew selection. Neither Costa Cruises nor any other cruise Co. select their captains and officers on the base of psychological tests for their leadership ability and ability to act in critical situation but only on the base of regular paper work: attractive CVs, licenses and certificates, interviews and ability of sweet talking.
Therefore I have bold to say If cruise companies will check now their captains and officers by those tests – many individuals will be found not capable for their emergency duties (reason – special point for discussion) and as a result , cruise ships industry need to be ready for new similar tragedies in future.
Today, we can see wide discussion of the “Costa Concordia” tragedy and many offers to revise ships designs and operational issues, but, actually, only approach to crew selection needs serious attention in order to guaranty passenger’s safety onboard.
