Collision on the Waal

The 86 meter long self-propelled barge Kelaniya collided head-on with barges being pushed by the 268 meter long self-propelled barge Veerhaven X on the Waal River in dense fog near Doornenburg, Netherlands.  The Kelaniya and one of the barges being pushed by the Veerhaven X became entangled together.  The Kelaniya also suffered significant water ingress requiring the crew to abandon the vessel.   A vessel with dewatering pumps were able to stabilize the Kelaniya.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Kelaniya was loaded with 900 tons of coal at the time.  The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
