Collision on the Waal

The 86 meter long self-propelled barge Kelaniya collided head-on with barges being pushed by the 268 meter long self-propelled barge Veerhaven X on the Waal River in dense fog near Doornenburg, Netherlands.  The Kelaniya and one of the barges being pushed by the Veerhaven X became entangled together.  The Kelaniya also suffered significant water ingress requiring the crew to abandon the vessel.   A vessel with dewatering pumps were able to stabilize the Kelaniya.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Kelaniya was loaded with 900 tons of coal at the time.  The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Norvind Again

Norvind Again

The 107 meter long, 5916 dwt freighter Norvind went aground at the entrance to Kragerø, Norway.  The freighter had run aground into the shallows due to a navigation error.  The Norvind was able to refloat itself without assistance and docked later the same day.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.  Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.  Initial reports state that the master and chief mate were tested for alcohol and the results were negative.  The Norvind has had two prior incidents in 2011.

Hoek van Holland Collision

Hoek van Holland Collision

The 97 meter long suction dredge Crestway collided with the sailboat Rio Scoe off the Hoek van Holland, Netherlands.   The sailboat was dis-masted.  No one was injured on either vessel.  The KNRM lifeboat was dispatched to the scene and took the sailboat under tow back to Harbor Mountain.  The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.  No reports of pollution being released.
