Danube River Collision

The 127 meter long passenger vessel Viktoria collided with the 100 meter long self-propelled barge Bavaria 52 on the Danube River near Bratislava, Slovakia.  The Viktoria with 160 passengers on board struck the Bavaria 52 amidship.   The Bavaria 52 suffered significant damage but not enough to have the Bavaria 52 to break-in-two  The Bavaria 52 was lightered 1.5 tons of fuel and was stabilized.   The Viktoria suffered significant damage to it’s bow which prevented the Viktoria to continue on.   The passengers were safely evacuated and will continue the cruise on another vessel.  None of the 5 crew of the Bavaria 52 were injured.

Immigrant Vessel Goes Aground

Reports state 2 women drown when a vessel with 250 immigrants went aground off the shores of the small island of Pantelleria, Italy.   The small fishing vessel was dangerously overloaded when it struck rocks near the coast.  The vessel had gotten lost when it went into the shallow waters offshore.   Many immigrants threw themselves into the water trying to reach shore even with the choppy seas.    Two patrol boats were able to rescue several in the water while rescuers onshore secured a line to help getting them out of the sea.

A crewman took an unexpected ride down the Ohio River near Wheeling, West Virginia.   The man was working on shifting cargo on a fully loaded coal barge when the mooring lines broke loose.   For 15 minutes, the crewman floated down the Ohio River towards the Pike Island lock and dam.   A towboat responded and was able to safely rescue the crewman.   The barge was secured, but only 100 yards from the dam.   The Coast Guard reported that several days of heavy rain was to blame for the barge breaking loose.   There was no injuries, damage or pollution released.
