Major Shipwrecks of 2011

Rena

The 236m cargo vessel Rena had struck the Astrolabe Reef, near Tauranga Harbour, around 2.20am October 5, 2011. There are no reported injuries to the 25 crew on board. The Astrolabe Reef is about 4 nautical miles north of Motiti Island (about 12 nautical miles off the coast).


MV Spice Islander

The ferry MV Spice Islander capsized and sank three hours after leaving the island of Unguja (Zanzibar),Tanzania on September 10, 2011. The MV Spice Islander was bound for Pemba island overloaded with passengers. Reports state there were at least 800 people on board. Search and recovery teams rescued 620 survivors.
